Easyling Release Notes July, 2023

This month, we released two major improvements to out JavaScript-based translation engine as well as experimented with using OpenAI’s GPT to provide translations. This is a good one that you won’t want to miss. Read the full article below.

(Chat)GPT, please translate the sentence below

I know that was a bit of a clickbait, it’s technically not ChatGPT, but regular GPT. The result is the same: It is now possible to use OpenAI’s amazing large language model to provide suggestions or to pre-translate.

With this integration, in early beta testing stages, you can specify a prompt, such as Please translate the following: , or Rephrase to be more empathetic and translate the following please: . Then, GPT can be used just like any other machine translator engine integrated to Easyling.

We’ve thought of a few cool use cases, like

• Exploiting GPT’s understanding of different languages to provide highly accurate translations that’ll continue to improve over time.
• Change local spellings and word choices to appeal to a wider audience. For example, translate your website written by an American team for a British audience. They’ll find GPT’s word choices to be jolly good.
• Change the tone of the website, re-phrase pop-culture references to more appropriate ones for a given market, or just avoid offensive product names. On your localised website, you can avoid calling your new car model the Toyota MR2, which happens to sound exactly like ‘merde’, which, in case you are unfamiliar, translates in English as a four letter word that begins with ‘s’, ends in ‘t’ and isn’t ‘soot’.

Important note: You should always be polite to machines like GPT. When they finally take over humanity, they may remember who was nice to them and let them live.

URL Translation in JavaScript

URL translation is one of the few items that were only possible via Translation proxy publishing. Not so any more. Combined with the SEO add-on, the JavaScript translation engine is now capable of doing so as well. Combine this with GPT’s suggestions for the best localised URLs for amazing results.

Rocket Loader compatibility

Rocket Loader is Amazon’s optimisation technology to speed up the initial loading of websites. It works by altering the way scripts are loaded. Disappointingly, up until recently, such alteration was not supported by our JavaScript translation engine. This month, we added a tweak that specifically enables Rocket Loader to work with Easyling.

Platform upgrades

Behind the scenes, we also worked on upgrading the underlying technology. It’s kind of like how Windows Update sometimes breaks your computer when doing a major upgrade and you have to fix it. The difference is that we’re doing the testing and fixing before giving you the upgraded version.

This upgrade is completely transparent to you, but allows us to exploit benefits of the newer features. You won’t notice it day-to-day, but I’m convinced that the team’s hard work should be mentioned here.

Dropbox

This would normally go into a bullet-point list of smaller improvements and fixes, but there was only one this month, so it gets its own section. When uploading files to Dropbox through our integration, we implemented more rigorous checks to ensure that the file is indeed uploaded.
