Easyling release notes February, 2024

Last month was so productive that this was bound to happen - a month when we focused on fixing existing features as opposed to building new ones. It’s also a pretty short month. Yeah. That’s the excuse I’ll use. The fixes are important though. Please read the details.

Translator algorithm

In-browser translation, like Crest does it, is a challenge. Websites nowadays are usually dynamic, so the algorithm must follow changes and translate updated segments. Some sites can have behaviours that “work against” this process e.g. by continuously updating segments. However, thanks to invaluable feedback we got while localizing some pages, we were able to add improvements that ensure that more websites than ever are compatible. The system is now better at finding elements where some part of it changed, but some text did not. In this scenario, it will not attempt re-translate the already translated content.

Additionally, the system reporting segments that have no translations yet is improved: it now considers the Handle unknown pages as externalized feature. This means that you can now specify the scope of the project via the Pages list and ensure that no content is picked up from other pages - just like with proxy.

Finally, the title tag in HTML is now processed as if it was a block element, like div or p. This allows additional features, such as Pattern matching to work with these. This is most useful when a page adds dynamic content as the title, like 74 results for "scottish fold" that could be on a search page of a cat shelter. On a sidenote, if you’re like me and thought folded-eared cats are all photoshopped, you should look up the Scottish fold. They are super cute.

Interface improvements

There’s one big one in the Workbench this month. By default, we have a set of supported target languages that we validate that all systems work as expected. However, it is possible to specify additional ones if required. This led to an edge-case where the Workbench couldn’t refresh these custom languages in All entries view. We squashed this bug, and it now works as expected.

We also tweaked some tiny things in the Dashboard. Some wording here, the position of a button there, things like that. All in the name of improving the service for you. I hope you’ll continue to enjoy using it as much as we enjoy creating it.
