Let’s talk about proxies!

In the first and second part of the series, we clarified the concept of translation proxy and how it makes the website translation process easier for both translators and content owners.

Today, we’ll try to answer some common concerns about the use of translation proxy-based solutions.

How do you store the translation? Is this safe? At Easyling, the translation is stored in the Google “cloud”. This sounds mysterious, but it really isn’t. Cloud computing is nothing else than storing data on remote servers of (usually) large web storage providers.

The Google Cloud Platform we use at Easyling is based on the Google infrastructure that meets the highest data security requirements.

Who owns the translation? The translation is the property of the content owners, and they can download the content in an applicable format (XLIFF, XML) any time for backup purposes.

What if the solution provider goes out of the business? One of the most common myths is that getting in a “vendor lock” is a serious danger if the translation is not stored on the content owner’s server and the translation proxy provider goes out of the business.

It’s not a secret that going out of business can happen to any company (including the web hosting company the content owner uses). Since the translation can be downloaded at any time, it would not be lost even in the worst case scenario.

Do online tools undermine translators’ business? Online website translation solutions are not good or bad per se, or not any more than any other technology. There are valid concerns about “translator mills” dictating lower and lower fees and discounting the profession in general.
